Lou Doctor ’79
Managing Director,
Arbor Advisors

Lou is a Managing Director at Arbor Advisors. He brings back to campus over twenty-five years of experience as a Silicon Valley technologist, entrepreneur and operating manager. Arbor Advisors is a technology focused investment bank.

Lou Doctor graduated RPI with a BSEE degree in 1979 and co-founded Raster Technologies in 1981, one of the first incubator companies on the RPI campus. Starting on the top floor of the Sage Lab with another Rensselaer alum, his idea was the creation on a computer screen of an almost infinite variety of colors, using dots of color in a technique similar to the Neo-Impressionist painting of Pointillism. The Raster Technologies device allowed the operator to produce a picture–as opposed to a blueprint-like computer drawing -- with as many as 16 million shades of color.

Raster raised venture capital from Venrock and Kleiner Perkins and grew to over $20M in sales before being acquired. Since then, Lou has founded or co-founded and held senior executive positions at five successful companies including Arbor Advisors, SuperMac Technology, Locality.com, and Truevision and Solar Designs, a nationwide reseller of residential PV solar systems.

Lou has served on the board of directors of numerous companies including Plaid Bros. Software (acquired by Sungard Data Systems in 2000) and Vidipax (acquired by Loudeye Technology in 2001).
